Al Caiola's guitar style combines the thick twang of Duane Eddy with the mellifluous jazz inflections of George Barnes, and in fact, Barnes is one of five guest guitarists on Caiola's 1962 album, Guitar Style. The trebly electric bass and vibes give the album a distinctive sound somewhere between guitar jazz and instrumental rock & roll. The aptly titled original "Straight Ahead" comes closest to plain rock, while most of the other cuts draw from pop and jazz repertoire. An intriguing exception is a mutated rendition of the Western classic "Tumbling Tumbleweeds." With Guitar Style, Caiola and his top-flight accompanists have created a serious but swinging virtuoso guitar album with popular appeal.
