Adrian Younge—a youthful L.A.-based producer with great taste in vintage R&B, jazz, and soundtracks—brings out the best in Souls of Mischief, who've long been one of hip-hop's most openminded collectives. Though the album features veteran rappers over a slew of sample-based beats, it never feels like a work of revivalism. It's a celebration not of a particular time period but of a specific shadowy atmosphere.
