Abandon's self-titled debut may be brief, but it still manages to showcase some serious future-thinking rock. Right away, Josh Engler's urgent melodies go to work painting a picture that combines elements of some of the best Christian rock acts of the decade. The band excels on tracks like "Be Alive in Me," which matches and even surpasses some of the best offerings from Delirious? "Providence" sets a biblical retelling of Peter's denial to fast-attacking yet mature rock that sounds like Sanctus Real meets the Killers. And "All Because of You" utilizes the same introspective post-emo sound that made Switchfoot's Nothing Is Sound a classic. Abandon first released this as a five-track EP (sans "Hold On") in July 2008. Every track is well crafted and polished, so it's a pity they only added one more song in the time that elapsed. Regardless, it is a solid debut that promises great things to come.
