Jackson Browne defined the sound of the ‘70s Southern California singer/songwriter with his sincere lyrical approach and calm, reassuring melodies, which were often delivered with multi-instrumentalist David Lindley providing a perfect counterpoint to Browne’s easeful acoustic guitar and piano. Browne has proven a fellow musician’s best friend in terms of lending support. (He produced Warren Zevon’s first album, after years of performing Zevon’s songs in concert, alongside those of other upcoming artists like Bonnie Raitt and Lowell George.) This tribute is a thank you of sorts from friends, contemporaries, and newer faces who’ve been influenced by Browne's timeless music. His friends Don Henley (with Blind Pilot), Bonnie Raitt (with Lindley), and J.D. Souther bookend this 23-track tribute, with Lyle Lovett delivering faithful readings of “Rosie” and “Our Lady of the Well.” Bruce Springsteen and wife Patti Scialfa offer the Spanish-flavored “Linda Paloma.” Many of Browne’s biggest songs—“Running on Empty,” “For a Dancer,” “Late for the Sky,” “Before the Deluge”—are here given subdued readings that best reveal his lyrical and melodic gifts alongside each performer’s shining vocal abilities.
